Hypertension Definition and
Other Definitions to Know

Like many people I didn't know the hypertension definition, nevertheless the meaning of blood pressure. Let's read the definitions below so we are all on the same page.

Just like me, you'll know the blood pressure definition and understand what normal blood pressure is, and what that means for our future.



Hypertension Definition Hypertension definition and some others

Blood Pressure - The measurement of the force on the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood through the blood vessels of the body. The pressure derives from the force and amount of blood pumped, and the flexibility and size of the arteries.

Blood pressure changes all the time due to activity, temperature, diet, emotion, posture, physical state, and medication use.

Diastolic Blood Pressure - The blood pressure when the heart is relaxed between beats. In adults this should be 80 or less according to authorities.

Systolic Blood Pressure - The blood pressure at the peak of a heart beat. In adults this should be 120 or less according to authorities.

Normal Blood Pressure - 120/80.

Pre-high Blood Pressure - Systolic blood pressure 120 - 139 and diastolic blood pressure 80 - 89.

Mild High Blood Pressure - Systolic blood pressure 140 - 159 and diastolic blood pressure 90 - 99.

Moderate to Severe High Blood Pressure - Systolic blood pressure consistently 160 or over or diastolic blood pressure consistently 100 or over.

Low Blood Pressure (hypotension) - Systolic blood pressure 90 or lower.
Hypertension Definition Hypertension - The medical name for high blood pressure.

Essential (primary) hypertension - High blood pressure with no identifiable cause. 90% of high blood pressure cases are essential.

Secondary hypertension - hypertension that is secondary to some disease. In other words, the disease has caused the high blood pressure.

Pulse Pressure - The difference between systolic and diastolic blood pressures. The normal range blood pressure of 120/80 gives a pulse pressure of 120 minus 80, which equals 40.
