Blood Type Diet. Or, Why Doesn't One Diet Fit All?
The Blood Type Diet is not a high blood pressure diet per se. But, you may find it lowering blood pressure naturally after all. Let's see if you like it. The theory behind the diet is that a certain food will react differently in the bodies of different people based on their blood type. Because there are four basic blood types, the Blood Type Diet is actually four different diets. Therefore, the diet for blood type O is different than the diet for blood type A, blood type B or blood type AB. A correct diet for your blood type could give you normal blood pressure. I can give you no general guidelines here because the diets vary greatly. For a full understanding, you should read Dr. Peter Adamo's book, "Eat Right 4 Your Type." I will give you a sampling of how the diets differ in encouraging weight loss (which has an effect on blood pressure). Beneficial are Type O: iodized salt, seafood, liver, red meat, kale, spinach, broccoli. Type A: soy foods, most vegetables, pineapple, vegetable oils. Type B: meat, liver, eggs, low fat dairy products, green vegetables. Type AB: seafood, tofu, dairy products, green vegetables, pineapple. Some foods that one blood type should eat must be absolutely avoided by another blood type. For instance, lamb is good for Type B, but Type A should avoid it. Either buy or get Dr. Adamo's book from the library to understand why. This diet does not encourage eating animal fats. Buy lean meat of the kind good for your blood type to help you achieve normal blood pressure.
The Blood Type Diet concept works in well with other diet choices. For instance, if you were Type A on the
Mediterranean Diet,
you would eat Type A vegetables, Type A protein and so forth. You can work the combination in with each of the other diets:
Low Sodium Diet,
Vegetarian Diet,
Dash Diet,
Life Change Diet.
