A Blood Pressure Meter Could Be Your Best Friend.
My blood pressure meter is a ReliOn Digital Blood Pressure Monitor. I believe it cost me around thirty dollars a few years ago. You should have a monitor, too, so below I've given you a little info. Attached to my monitor is a cuff that I wrap around my left upper arm. When it's on, I push the start button, whereupon a little air pump in the monitor inflates the cuff to a certain pressure, then turns off. The pressure gradually dissipates, then releases suddenly, and the systolic and diastolic pressures appear on the display along with the pulse. This morning it read 138/73 with a pulse of 59. The procedure is easy to do. I enjoy checking my progress toward normal blood pressure. Besides my brand of blood pressure meter, many other monitors are for sale, but before going into those let's talk about something else.
Why check your blood pressure regularly at home?A home blood pressure monitor is to blood pressure as a home scale is to weight. When you weigh your body in the morning, you are checking one aspect of your overall health - how are you handling the intake and utilization of food. When I take my blood pressure, I'm checking other aspects. Am I eating the right food, supplements, herbs, vitamins and minerals? Am I exercising right, getting enough rest, handling the stresses of living? My and your blood pressure is more important than our body weight, and if we look at weight as a factor in blood pressure, we won't go far off the rails. This is why I maintain that getting a blood pressure monitor and a digital scale is the first thing you do on a blood pressure control program. With these two items, we can mark our progress toward normal blood pressure and health.
What type of monitor should you use?The blood pressure cuff, hand pump and stethoscope used in the doctor's office is the most accurate blood pressure gauge. However, it isn't practical for home use. The home blood pressure monitor is a digital instrument of three basic types - arm, wrist or finger. The upper arm cuff matches most closely the doctor's office device, so probably is the most accurate. Next most accurate would be the wrist cuff followed by the finger blood pressure machine. I recommend the upper arm cuff. Some of the companies making monitors are A & D Medical Life Source, Forecare, Homedics, Hyundai,
Lumiscope,
Microlife,
Omron,
Panasonic, Prevention,
ReliOn,
and Samsung. Which of these makes the best blood pressure monitor? I don't know. Google them. Here are some examples of what you would type in: ReliOn Blood Pressure Monitor Omron Digital Blood Pressure Monitor Omron Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor Lumiscope Blood Pressure Monitor You can pick some of them up at a drug store or full service store like Wal-Mart.
Your blood pressure meter will become your friend whom you visit each morning. Sometimes you may not like it when you get a high reading, but if you truly take charge of your own blood pressure, your monitor will validate your attempt to lower blood pressure naturally. And as you approach your normal blood pressure, this little instrument will become your "best blood pressure meter" for sure. Well, this is where you start even before adjusting your
diet,
changing your foods, supplements and herbs, exercising, or changing anything about your lifestyle. Get the monitor first, then get friendly with it.
